Case Study: Data Engineering Project for a Global FMCG Client

Project Goal

The goal of the project was to accelerate the material costing process by approximately 2–3 weeks. This was achieved by decoupling the artwork process (design and approval of labels and graphics) from the costing process, allowing both activities to run in parallel and reducing the overall lead time for new initiatives.

Scope of Work

The project was executed by a single experienced Data Engineer from QAbird, who was responsible for:

  • Designing and implementing data pipelines to enable independent data flow between artwork and costing workflows,

  • Integrating data from multiple sources (including SAP systems),

  • Validating and testing data accuracy, building monitoring logic and technical documentation,

  • Optimizing data processing and collaborating with key business stakeholders.

Technology Stack

  • Cloud & Data Platform: Microsoft Azure

  • Tools & Languages: Python, SQL, Databricks

  • Integrations: SAP, artwork management systems

  • Version Control & Deployment: Git, Azure DevOps

Business Value Delivered

Reduced Critical Path:

  • Product initiatives are launched 2–2.5 weeks faster, enabling quicker time-to-market and improved project throughput.

Increased Revenue Potential:

  • Earlier costing enables faster Net Operating Sales (NOS) realization across multiple markets.

Cost Savings:

  • Automation eliminated the need for external contractor support, reducing procurement costs.

Operational Efficiency:

  • The system addressed recurring “urgent costing rework” challenges and improved overall process consistency and speed.

Project Timeline

  • Start: Q4 2023

  • Go-live: Q3 2024

  • Duration: ~9 months

Summary

This project is a clear example of how a skilled individual with deep technical knowledge can drive measurable business impact in a global FMCG organization. Through smart data engineering and automation, we delivered a scalable solution that shortened lead times, reduced costs, and accelerated delivery — faster, smarter, better.
